How to Set Site Favicon in WordPress

Site favicon has now been merged into core, you will no longer need a plugin to add a favicon to your WordPress site.

What is a site favicon? That’s a good question.

According to Wikipedia:

A favicon (short for Favorite icon), also known as a shortcut icon, Web site icon, tab icon or bookmark icon, is a file containing one or more small icons, most commonly 16×16 pixels, associated with a particular website or web page. A web designer can create such an icon and upload it to a website (or web page) by several means, and graphical web browsers will then make use of it. Browsers that provide favicon support typically display a page’s favicon in the browser’s address bar (sometimes in the history as well) and next to the page’s name in a list of bookmarks. Browsers that support a tabbed document interface typically show a page’s favicon next to the page’s title on the tab, and site-specific browsers use the favicon as a desktop icon.

The good news is that you can set up a favicon on your site within minutes using WordPress Customizer.  Site favicon is now part of WordPress core. What that means is that, you won’t need to install any plugin or code your theme to get this feature.

Many site owners who depend on  theme options to add a favicon to  their site, often lose the site favicon when switched with another theme. That is not the best.

Here is how to add a site favicon to your WordPress site. You will need to follow these steps carefully:

  1. Find a suitable image you wish to use on your site. Your logo or something.
  2. Click on Customize under the Appearance tab in your WordPress dashboard.

  3. Select the Site Identity tab in your customizer
  4. Choose the site icon you want. The next window will allow you to crop the image to the shape you want.
  5. Save your work.

And, you are good to go.

So, anytime you want to set a site  favicon on a WordPress site you don’t have to use a plugin any longer. Simply, use the in-built function in the customizer to do that. In doing so, when you change your theme, you won’t have to worry about loosing your site favicon again. It will stay there.
